CASTANYADA 2025: CULTURE, AUTUMN AND FAMILY
La Castanyada is one of the most beloved festivals of the Catalan autumn, celebrated on the night of 31 October and 1 November. It has its roots in ancient rituals that linked the fruits of autumn — such as chestnuts, sweet potatoes and panellets— with the memory of the deceased, a gesture full of family warmth and remembrance.
Although this tradition has echoes throughout the Peninsula —such as the magosto in Galicia or Asturias— it is in Catalonia where the Castanyada reaches its maximum expression. Here, the streets are filled with the aroma of roasted chestnuts, the stalls of the “castanyeres” They fill entire squares, and hearts beat to the shared rhythm of memory and community.
